FAQs

The following are Frequently Asked Questions from students pertaining to the SURE Program.

Are international students eligible?

Yes, as long as you are a full-time University of Michigan Ann Arbor Student.

I am from another university, am I eligible to apply?

The SURE Program is only open to undergraduate applicants who are enrolled at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus.

The application says I must be a rising undergraduate by the start of the program, am I eligible?

Yes, as long as you have completed your freshman year.

When does the application become available?

The application opens on January 15 for the Summer 2024 program.

When is the last day to complete the application?

The application must be completed by the deadline of January 28, 2024 at 11:59pm.

I would like to take a class during the Spring or Summer semester. Can I still participate in the SURE program?

As long as taking a class does not prevent you from working full-time and fulfilling the requirements set forth by the SURE faculty advisor/department, you can explore the option of taking a class. However, you must consult with your SURE faculty advisor regarding the feasibility of taking a course during your SURE internship. If a student is selected for the SURE Program and would like to take a class, it is not recommended that the student carry a full-time course load while participating in the SURE Program.

The website says the students must participate in the SURE Program for 10-12 weeks, but the program runs from the beginning of May until the end of August which is 16 weeks. I’m confused, can you clarify that for me?

Students are expected to work for 10-12 weeks during the summer between the listed program dates, roughly 400 hours. This allows for flexibility if students have planned vacations during the summer. If students are away from Ann Arbor for more than two consecutive weeks during these dates, they are not eligible to participate in the SURE Program.

Is the SURE Program binding? Am I required to participate if I am selected for the program?

If students are accepted into the SURE Program, they are given a window of time to accept or decline that offer. This time is meant to give students the opportunity to weigh all options that may be available to them for the summer. We don’t encourage students to accept a SURE offer if there is a strong likelihood they are more interested in another opportunity that would result in them wanting to leave the SURE Program.

I have submitted my application, do I need to contact the corresponding faculty directly?

Each department handles the application process differently. We ask that you do not contact the departments directly during the selection process. Departments will reach out to students they would like to interview.

I’m not sure how to obtain a copy of my unofficial transcript and upload it to my application.  How can this be done?

Students can access a copy of their unofficial transcripts in the Student Business section of Wolverine Access. You will then need to print or save your unofficial transcript as a PDF and upload it to your SURE application.
